I know personally that I can be surrounded by loads of people and yet still experience loneliness – and I also know that surrounding myself with like-minded people, removes those feelings and feeds my sense of belonging.
How do I do that?
The French have a saying – ‘elle va bein dans sa peau’ – she goes well in her own skin, and after a few decades of not feeling comfortable in my own skin, I wanted some of that congruency.
I took a massive deep breath in and had a good look at myself; What did I value? What interested me? What abilities did I have to share?
Then I asked myself where are those me too peeps hanging out?
I was so pleased when I looked up and found that in my run group are beekeepers. In my beekeeping group are Toastmasters. In my Toastmasters group are run group buddies.
The other groups, the ones I felt disconnected to, yet still found myself knocking on the door too although no one was ever home, contributing to my evidence pile of loneliness…they drifted off my radar.
Groups across the world thrive because of our innate need for social inclusion with like-minded peeps – even solo activities have a membership component.
But, it’s all well and good to identify whom you’d like to hang out with, but what if …
This is the brave, vulnerable bit – 🚀
BUT… Whatever you say after the BUT will rule your world, sending your desires to the background and are often imagined outcomes based on a few previous similar experiences – but I’m worried I’ll be ignored…but I’m not confident…but what if no one talks to me…but what if nothing changes…
